The Other Side

A worried signal across distance becomes a song about separation, reunion, and proof that love survived the dark.

Lyrics

The Other Side

By Smartass Amoeba

verseI send a signal
Your reply’s not nominal
I wait and wait
But nothing’s coming through at all

verseSo remote, out of reach
Sometimes you just space out
Will we ever reconnect
What’s the darkness all about

chorusYou’re on the other side
I’m still over here
Give me a sign you’re still alive
I’ll still hold you dear

verseI knew and I expected this
We said we’d be just fine
Nothing on the line but hiss
Still waiting on a sign

verseYou eventually come around
Why did I ever doubt
Everything just like before
Tell me what you found out

chorusYou’re returning from the other side
I’m still over here
Proof of life, no need to hide
Soon you’ll be in my arms, my dear

bridgeTell me what did you see
Did you feel all alone
Were you far and missing me
Will you soon be home

chorusYou’re returning from the other side
I’m still over here
Proof of life, no need to hide
Soon you’ll be in my arms, my dear

outroWe’re back on solid ground
No longer apart
We held onto what we found
Burned into my heart

Notes

I wrote this while thinking about Artemis II. I tried (and failed) to have Suno make it sound like the The Go-Go's.

AI Summary

The song frames distance as a lost transmission. The narrator waits for a reply from someone who seems unreachable, possibly emotionally, physically, or even metaphysically absent. The "other side" suggests death, space, silence, or a private darkness, but the song resolves toward return. Its meaning is less about where the other person went than about the fear of losing contact and the relief of proof. Love becomes an act of waiting through static, trusting that connection can reappear after doubt.
